Electroplating on ABS/PC+ABS Plastic

Industrial chromium plating is also known as hard chrome or engineered chrome.

The plating process is similar to electroplating one metal with another using an electric current, but because plastics do not conduct electricity, the plastic surface must be pre-treated. Three chemical treatments are used to prepare the surface for the application of a nickel primer coat, a copper primer coat and the final chrome electroplating.

Electroplating for simplicity, weight savings, and design freedom

Chromium is completely tarnish-free, hard and is used to reduce friction, add wear resistance, increase corrosion resistance, and has an elegant blue-metallic appearance. Bright chromium plating has always been the favored decorative plated finish for both metal and plastic components. Chrome plating is commonly used in automotive parts, office furniture, office equipment and domestic appliances. The largest plated parts are the bumpers of cars. The plating-on-plastics industry in both the European and North American markets has been expanding, primarily due to the interest in this finish in the automotive industry. Other mainstream applications of the process have retained a firm hold on their market sector and a number of significant new uses have appeared.

ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene), and PC are the best plastics for electroplating. ABS shows superior ductility and adhesion in the plated condition; in a ABS+PC blend, the applier should offer fireproof material, PC%, etc., and references before selecting 70%-95% ABS+PC. ABS plastic moulding is the most important property, particularly for the auto parts industry such as vehicle bumpers. Because of the quality of plastic granule is a critical factor for the final electroplated production, most of the auto parts customers require an analysis report of granule plastic for electroplating. In addition to being electrically conductive, it should adhere well to the substrate if the final coating system was to show good adhesion.

Process for Injection Molding

ABS plastics
    Step 1: Selecting Material
  • ABS Plastic Case-- Selects the ABS plastics which the butadiene is 15%-16%. Its adhesion is the best.
  • Applier should offer fireproof material, PC%, etc, and references before selecting 70%-95%PC+ABS.
  • Material of plating on plastic should be dried totally.
  • Material of plating on plastic must prevent dyeing.
  • Material of plating on plastic should be attested by UL.

    Step 2: Mould Design
  • customer provide us the material or tooling. Or customer provide the tooling date and we can ask for making tooling. We are availble to injection molding by our machine.
  • Remains points for electroplating rack in mould of plating on plastic.
  • Trend of moulds design: Moulds should be resistant to high temperature and not easily opened to create crude outline, the ejection point should not be too small to prevent entering water and breaking. Prevents discharge of tip. Reminds the ventilator. Pays attention to that thickness of tip will influence the exterior and the combination line created in the ejection hole.
  • Designs passage in the hole to clean the remnants.
  • Remain the thickness of membrane which formed after electroplating.

ejection
    Step 3: Injection Molding
  • Avoid using the mould releases, if it is essential to use one, the Fluorine-type may be used.
  • The ejection parameter such as plastic Tm and mould temperature should rise as high as possible and the ejection stress and speed should be reduced to lessen the stress.
  • Affirming the surface: There must be no combination line, scratch, etc.
  • Packing: adopt tray and paper case to prevent being scratched.
  • Affirming the size: decides the size and range of length and width according to the requirement of the firm.
